Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) represent a new class of flexible, scalable, low-cost technology for harvesting solar energy.  In OPV devices containing electron donors and acceptors that form a bicontinuous network, or a bulk heterojunction (BHJ), assuring the interconnectivity within the device active layer is a prerequisite to generate efficient solar cells.  Electroactive small molecules constructed with completely planar, symmetric end-groups can form tight, aligned crystal packing and favorable morphology dictated by p-p interactions.  Attaching C2-pyrene as end-groups to a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) core leads to materials with enhanced intermolecular connectivity, resulting in high device power conversion efficiencies and fill factor. The use of end-groups to direct molecular self-assembly represents an effective strategy for designing high-performance small molecule OPV devices.
