Block copolymer polymerized ionic liquids (PILs), a new type of solid-state polymer electrolyte, are of interest for energy conversion and storage devices, such as fuel cells, batteries, supercapacitors, and solar cells. In this study, a series of diblock copolymer PILs composed of a methyl methacrylate (MMA) non-ionic monomer and a 1-[(2-methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-3-butylimidazolium bromide (MEBIm-Br) IL monomer with various PIL compositions were synthesized. For comparison, a series of random copolymer PILs with similar PIL compositions were also prepared to compare with the block copolymer PILs. To investigate the anion effect on morphology and hence ionic conductivity, the bromide anion (Br-) in both block and random copolymer PILs was subsequently anion exchanged into bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI-) and bicarbonate (HCO3-) anions. The overall objective of this study is to systematically investigate the morphology and its effect on anion conductivity (transport) on both hydrophobic (TFSI-) and hydrophilic (Br- and HCO3-) block and random copolymer PILs.
