For consumers with food allergies avoidance of the foods that trigger their allergic reactions becomes critically important and they rely on complete and accurate labels on foods to be able to make safe food choices.  In February 2010, Canada amended its Food and Drug Regulations to enhance the labelling of food allergen and gluten sources and added sulphites.  The new labelling requirements will come into effect on August 4, 2012, and will require that whenever food allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites (above 10 ppm) are intentionally added to a food, as ingredients or components of ingredients, they must be declared on the label.  This presentation will provide an overview of ingredient labelling regulations for food alelrgens in Canada and will also cover related issues such as precautionary labelling and allergen-free claims.
