Iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using gas-phase inverse-diffusion flame for arsenate (As(V)) removal. In the inverse-diffusion flame, which was produced by injections of oxidizer into a surrounding flow of fuel, various factors such as flame temperature, oxygen-enrichment and fuel dilution, and fuel composition, and Fe(II) fraction were controlled to change morphology, crystallinity, particle size, and oxidation state of the iron oxide nanoparticles. Here, As(V) adsorption isotherms for the synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles were obtained and compared with a commonly used goethite-based adsorbent, Bayoxide E33� (E33). Several synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles exhibited much higher adsorption capacity than E33. Since the inverse-diffusion flame synthesis is more cost-effective than common solution/precipitation techniques and suitable for large-scale production, the synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles can be suitable materials for As(V) removal in adsorptive water treatment systems.
