Photocatalysis has recently become a popular subject for water purification and a variety of products utilizing photocatalytic functions have been commercialized. Among numerous materials for photocatalysis, TiO2 is the most appealing one for its high stability and low cost. In our work nano titania (TiO2) was synthesized with sol-gel technique and modified by carbon nanotube (CNT) template method. In this method carbon nanotubes (CNT) and some dopants are utilized in sol-gel synthesized TiO2 to improve the surface area and photocatalytic activity. The effect of heat treatment conditions and presence of sodium, iron and cobalt were also studied. The organic contaminant studied was methylene blue which was oxidized under UV irradiation. It was observed that utilization of CNT both enhanced surface area and activity. Compositions with highest CNT content had better activities for their ability to delay charge recombination. Also the results showed that sodium doping increases the activity.
