For some time we have been interested in combining amido donors and phosphine ligands into chelating arrays for coordination to both early and late transition elements.  The reason for the choice of these two particular donor types goes back to the basic tenets of hard-soft, acid-base theory wherein the amido unit can be considered as a hard base and the phosphine is classified as a soft base.  But the real challenge has been to arrange these donors into chelating arrays that allow these ligand types to bind to metals in different geometries.  This lecture will explore some of our successes in multidentate ligand designs by examining the effect of the linkers, a selection of which is shown below:
