The synthesis of colloidal silicon nanoparticles are of interest for a wide variety of applications such as inks for solar photovoltaics and as biological nanoreporters. Additional functionalization can also be achieved through purposefully doping the nanoparticles. While there are several all solution routes to silicon nanoparticles, the most successful routes to date are those that employ gas phase decomposition, plasma or mechanical alloying routes. Part of the reason for the slow progress in colloidal synthesis may be the difficulties in a controlled 4 e� reduction process, the air-sensitivity of the reagents and products and the strong covalent bonding both within the nanoparticle and to the surface termination groups. The oxidation of Zintl phases along with application of microwave-assisted synthesis will be presented both for undoped and doped silicon nanoparticles. Current roadblocks and recent achievements of this research group will be highlighted.
