The complex (tBu-SalAmEE)Al (tBu-SalAmEEH3 = N,N-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol, Figure 1) is a single, high symmetry species in solution, by variable temperature 1H NMR (20 � 90 �C) and 13C NMR. Cyclic esters, including lactide and caprolactone, are polymerized by (tBu-SalAmEE)Al. High molecular weights and narrow PDIs are achievable. Evidence consistent with cyclic polymers includes retention volume and intrinsic viscosity relative to linear analogues. Some Lewis bases show evidence of coordination to (tBu-SalAmEE)Al. This is consistent with the proposed coordination-insertion polymerization mechanism.
