Unconventional approaches to exploit established materials in photovoltaics have great potential to offer novel engineering opportunities, device functionalities, and integration possibilities. This presentation will provide an overview of materials and fabrication strategies for photovoltaic systems that incorporate a large collection of ultrathin, micro/nanostructured solar cells that are derived from bulk, wafer-based source materials through conventional lithographic and etching procedures. Techniques of deterministic assembly provided a practical route to manipulate ultrathin, micro- and nanoscale building blocks, enabling their device- and module-level integration on wide ranging classes of substrates with advantages in device layouts, areal coverages, and cost structures that exceed capabilities with established technologies.
