This presentation will discuss the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a three-coordinate (PNPiPr)Pd+ cation. (PNPiPr)Pd+ cations are generated by abstracting triflate from (PNPiPr)PdOTf using either sodium or silylium cations in combination with weakly coordinating anions (tetraarylborates and carboranes). Magnetic susceptibility measurements and DFT calculations suggest a triplet ground state. In the absence of a base these highly unsaturated palladium cations undergo isomerization of the ancillary ligand from diisopropyl phosphine (PNPiPr) to isopropyl n-propyl phosphine (PNPnPr,iPr). The isomerization allows for coordination of arenes by decreasing the steric congestion around the metal.
