The cytotoxicity of dirhodium tetraacetate was first studied in the late 1970's, and the biological relevance of its derivatives has since been investigated.  Previous research in our lab focused on the anticancer properties of dirhodium carboxylate compounds with a series of diimine ligands (1,10-phenanthroline, dipyrido[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline, dipyrido[3,2a:2�,3�c]phenazine, benzo<i>dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine). Currently, we have expanded this metal-metal bonded diimine series by exchanging the acetate ligands for various other bridging groups. This new series of compounds was characterized by several techniques, including: X-Ray crystallography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and electronic absorption spectroscopy.  The cytotoxicity of these compounds towards HeLa cells was also studied using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.
