Photocatalytic water splitting using solar energy is completely renewable energy production process, where the extensive conversion of energies in visible light is essential. Organic polymer semiconductors are attractive because of their low cost, ability to be mass produced, and abundance. Recently, graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4) was found to be a photocatalyst that can generate H2 or O2 from an aqueous solution with the respective sacrificial reagent under visible irradiation.g-C3N4. This indicates that these organic polymer semiconductors are suitable candidates for visible-light-responsive photocatalysts of overall water splitting by a single component. One of the most beneficial properties of g-C3N4 is that it is easy to modify morphology or incorporate other elements into its structure. The paper discusses the examples of the modification including synthesis with porosity, copolymerization with other organic monomers, and dye sensitization.
