The heterogeneous copper-based catalysts are cheap and versatile alternatives to currently used materials. They have a very high potential for applications in fuel cells, production of energy-rich materials, and CO and CO2 conversion. However, when used on solid supports, it is necessary to control the amount, oxidation state, and nanostructuring of copper.  The present work will evaluate the accessibility of ammonia-modified solid substrates as a hydrogen source in copper deposition processes, explore the approach to remove the remaining ligands by ammonia exposure, and probe the potential to use ligand replacement chemistry to control the topmost layer of the produced nanostructures. We use atomic force microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and DFT calculations to study these processes.
