The use of hydrogen as a partial substitute to diesel oil and its effect on the exhaust concentration of pollutant components from a stationary diesel engine are investigated. A numerical simulation was performed to evaluate the formation of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and particulate matter (PM) emissions. An one-dimensional software dedicated to simulate engine gas exchange, combustion and after-treatment of combustion products was used. The geometric characteristics of a production, four-cylinder diesel engine operating with constant speed, variable load and hydrogen concentrations of 10% and 25% as diesel oil substitute was used in the simulation. The results indicate that increasing concentrations of hydrogen in the fuel causes considerable reductions of CO, CO2, NOX and PM emissions, mainly at high loads.
