Two different photosensitive monomers consisting of ONB esters were prepared in high yields, 1-(4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrophenyl)ethyl acrylate (M1 ) with a polymerizable double bond and 1-(4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrophenyl)ethyl propiolate (M2 ) with a polymerizable triple bond. Both monomers can be converted into polymers featuring photocleavable side groups. M1  was polymerized under free radical conditions where the yield and the molecular weight were decreased because of the presence of the nitro group. M2  was polymerized with transition metal mediated coordination polymerization, which results in photosensitive polymers with a conjugated backbone in high molecular weights showing that this polymerization was not negatively influenced by the nitro group of the ONB ester. After irradiation with UV light both polymers showed a cleavage of the ONB ester in moderate yields.
