Oxidative degradation characteristics of silica-supported amine sorbents with varying amounts of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA-T) and polyethylene glycol (PEG-P200 or P600) have been studied by infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.  Thermal treatment of the sorbents in oven at 100 oC for 12 h changed their colors from white to yellow.  IR and NMR studies showed that yellow color of degraded sorbents is resulted from imide species.  Addition of PEG to the sorbents improved both of their CO2 capture capacity and oxidative degradation resistance.  Presence of PEG in the sorbents dispersed amine on silica surface through hydrogen bonding between amines of TEPA and hydroxyl groups in PEG.  Oxidative degradation resistance and CO2 capture capacity of the amine sorbents can be optimized through adjusting the ratio of hydroxyl to amine in the TEPA/PEG mixture.  This presentation will also discuss the mechanism of interaction of CO2 with fresh and degraded silica-supported amine.
