Numerous research has demonstrated the potential of membrane processes for post-combustion CO2 capture compared to absorption processes. Recently, Merkel and al. have shown that the targeted CO2/N2 membrane selectivity is around 20-40 and the critical parameter to optimize is the membrane permeance (>1,000 GPU).Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTIL) are known to present advantages such as negligible vapor pressure, high thermal stability and relevant properties for gas separations. Our team has developed different types of gel membrane, with a minimum selectivity of 20, such as cross-linked poly(vinylimidazolium)-RTIL gel membranes and physically gelled ionic liquid membranes prepared with low-molecular weight gelator. RTIL-based gel membranes are characterized by gas permeation measurements and promising results have been obtained with CO2 permeability up to 1,000 Barrer. Current work is focused on the realization of thin film membranes with the ambitious target of 10,000 GPU which could lead to an economically viable CO2 capture process.
