Silicones have been used in intraocular lenses for nearly three decades.  Recently, silicones impregnated with macromers (silicone oligomers with acrylate end groups) have enabled the development of lens implants that can be non-invasively re-shaped after cataract surgery to give optimal refractive correction for cataract patients.  Spatial patterning with UV light is used to selectively crosslink macromer molecules into an interpenetrating network.  The resulting concentration profile of remaining macromer drives diffusion-induced shape change.  We propose a theoretical model for this self-contained, force-free deformation and compare the predicted magnitude and rate of shape change with experiment data for PDMS systems.
