We reported a new strategy to prepare polystyrene-silica core-shell composite nano-particles by utilizing spherical poly(acrylic acid) brushes (SPB) as templates. First of all, narrowly dispersed SPBs consisting of a polystyrene (PS) core and a shell of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) chains covalently attached to the surface of PS core by one end were synthesized by photo-emulsion polymerization. Then, silica shells were fabricated via the hydrolysis and condensation of the tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) catalyzed by ammonia in SPB and on the surface of PS core. The obtained composite nano-particles show pH dependence. Hollow silica spheres were obtained by dissolving the PS core with chloroform.
