By exploiting the selectivity of the metathesis reaction between a,?-dienes and a,?-diacrylates, alternating AB copolymers were synthesized by acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization. Unlike standard ADMET polymerizations, the copolymerization of dienes and diacrylates does not require high vacuum conditions. Because of this characteristic, the effect of various solvents that are not typically used in ADMET polymerizations could be explored. Additionally, by performing polymerizations with Grubbs 2nd generation catalyst and Hoveyda-Grubbs 2nd generation catalyst in the same solvent, a comparison could be made between the effect of various solvents on the phosphine-containing Grubbs catalyst and the phosphine-free Hoveyda-Grubbs type catalyst.
