Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is an emerging technology to burn coal. It is attractive because CO2 produced in the combustion is clean and ready for subsequent sequestration. CLC is implemented with two interconnected reactors. In one, fuel reacts with oxygen released from an oxygen carrying material (OC). The reduced OC is then transferred into the air reactor, and is reoxidized by air. In CLC, fuel must be gasified to achieve a suitable combustion rate.An offshoot of CLC is chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU). In CLOU oxygen is spontaneously released in the fuel reactor, eliminating need for gasification.Our studies proved that copper based CLOU is feasible. Reactions were carried out above the Tammann temperatures of the OC materials causing sintering which is undesirable in fluidized bed reactors. Thus the OC must be supported.Our results investigating Cu based OC systems on several supports will be reported.
