The field of chemical catalysis has grown immensely in the past century. However, catalysis of reactions of the p-block elements is almost non-existent. Over the past decade, we have investigated reactions based on elements in Groups 14, 16 and 17, under the newly developed paradigm of �Lewis-base activation of Lewis acids�.  This lecture will describe our most recent efforts to design, understand and apply synthetically useful cyclofunctionalization reactions of the chalcogens and halogens the under catalysis by Lewis bases.
