The Colombian petroleum company, ECOPETROL, through its research institute, the Colombian Petroleum Institute, has developed its own technology to improve the physical and chemical properties of heavy and extra-heavy oil. The process consists in the separation of heavy fraction of the crude oil by means of the interaction with a solvent of paraffinic nature, operating at moderate conditions of pressure and temperature. According to established operating conditions is achieved the precipitation of the heavier molecules, among which include the asphaltenes. Due to asphaltenes physical and chemical characteristics, they have a high associate value for your use in processes of pyrolysis, combustion and gasification, principally by have high calorific value and a significant concentration of residual maltenes. Based on what was above mentioned, they can be subject to a thermal cracking, where the products obtained can be used as part of the refining process
