In an effort to increase  the ratio of short-chain fatty acids from algae biomass, we demonstrate  that protein-protein interactions between the fatty acid acyl carrier  protein and thioesterase govern fatty acid hydrolysis within the algal  chloroplast. Using green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model host organism  for exogenous thioesterases, our in vitro and in vivo findings  highlight the critical role of protein-protein interactions and the  importance of this phenomenon in manipulating fatty acid biosynthesis in microalgae.
