The use of essential oils like thymol may be gaining interest for use in animal feed or treatment of animals to help reduce the pathogen load.  Thymol is effective against various pathogenic bacteria, but significant losses of the compound in piglet caecal simulations have previously been shown.  We have postulated that a conjugate of thymol may allow thymol to be available in the lower gut.  In this study we measured the in vitro absorption of thymol in an everted swine intestinal segment system.  A modified and improved GC method was developed to easily measure the thymol content of samples.  The GC separation was carried out on a 30 m � 0.25 mm � 0.25 mm film thickness Equity�-1701 fused silica capillary column, resulting in a linear peak response over 1�500 mg/L.  These in vitro studies demonstrated the usefulness of conjugating thymol for protection in the swine digestive system.
