�Natural Fiber Welding� � an ionic liquid-based method by which fibrous biopolymer materials (i.e., cotton and silk) are selectively transformed into composites are discussed.  Biopolymers from natural fibrous materials are selectively swelled and mobilized to create unique composites.  Process parameters such as time, and temperature, as well as the type, purity, and amount of solvent applied directly impact observed results.  Detailed characterizations of process methods establish controlled and reproducible means to effectively alter these natural materials both chemically and physically.  In particular, we present data that characterize the effect of ionic liquid purity on the creation of composite materials.
