One goal of our research group is to study the formation of linear polyphosphonium salts from the SN2 chemistry of distal bisphosphines with distal alkyl dihalides. For my research 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (1) was reacted with 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene (2) to form a polyphosphonium salt, which was characterized by 31P, 1H, and 13C NMR in DMSO-d6 solvent. This poster will present the results of an investigation of reaction parameters including solvent systems, temperatures, and time spans, and how they dictate the extent of polymerization.
