Vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) is a separation technique that can be used for the separation of complex alkaloid mixtures.  The VLC system is applied to the analysis of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA's), which are commonly found in the plant family Boraginaceae.  As members of this plant family the PA's of Lindelofia longiflora and Solenanthus scardicus will be analyzed as to the efficiency of the solid phase separation technique.  This is also the first investigation into the PA content of S. scardicus.   The separated alkaloids found in Lindelofia and Solenanthus will be investigated using instrumental methods including gas liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
