Carbohydrates are abundant natural products and renewable resources; they have great potential as building blocks for novel materials. Previously, we have synthesized several classes of glycolipids by functionalization of a-methyl glycosides of D-glucose and D-glucosamine and found that some of the glycolipids were effective organogelators. In order to further understand the molecular structure and self-assembling relationship, we have synthesized a new series of glycolipids by functionalization of �-phenoxyl D-glucosamine and analyzed their gelation abilities in several solvents. In this presentation, the preparation and characterization of these compounds will be discussed.
