A bacterial strain (designated UA 323) was isolated from a water sample taken from the San Elijo Lagoon in Cardiff, California, and cultivated for potential active chemical compounds. Fractions of the organic extract of this Gram negative bacterium showed interesting results in NMR and TLC analyses as well as in growth inhibition tests against a Mycobacterium. The sample was cultivated in 10L of Universal Marine Broth (UB) and challenged by Mycobacterium marinum once it reached stationary phase. The challenged culture was grown for several more days, centrifuged, filtered, and fractionated based on polarity. The resulting fractions were analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The isolated compounds yielded by the fractions will be characterized for their structure based on inhibition assays.
