A homologous series of olioethylene glycols has been prepared through the modular, systematic application of the Williamson ether synthesis a sequence of protection/deprotection steps.  These glycols are synthetic intermediates in the preparation of a series of benzo-crown ethers with variously-sized cavities.  Benzo-30-crown-10 and benzo-27-crown-9 have been isolated and purified, with benzo-24-crown-8 forthcoming.  The mono-benzo ethers are hypothesized to bind dibenzylammonium ions more strongly than each corresponding dibenzo analog due to the reduced number of phenolic oxygen atoms.
