Quantum dots (QD) are semi-conductive nanocrystals that provide an appealing strategy to harvest light energy in solar cells. Recently, a great deal of interest arisen to study quantum dots because scientists have been able to increase photovoltaic efficiencies by attaching quantum dots to patterned semiconductor layers. In addition, quantum dots have other useful applications for various technologies, such as electronics, solar energy generation, and biomedical imaging. However, during the manufacture, use, and disposal of quantum dot nanoparticles, toxic compounds, such as cadmium selenide, are released in to the environment. Hence, photovoltaic systems cause potential physical hazards, which require special concern.Understanding the structure, size, and surface of the quantum dots can help to explain the toxicity of nanomaterial in the environment.  Quantum dots are available in various sizes and compositions, which usually consist of Cadmium selenide (CdSe), cadmium telluride (CdTe), zinc selenide (ZnSe), or lead selenide (PbSe) core surrounded by a zinc or cadmium sulfide shell.This research focuses on the surface functionality related stability of QDs. The objective of this research is to explore how quantum dots and their surface chemistry influence their stability. Gold nanoparticles are very stable, and easy to use. A controlled monolayer on AuNPs can provide a guide to indicate the fate and toxicity of QDs.
