Alkyl- and aryl-substituted derivatives of the 1-carba-closo-dodecaborate(1-) anion (CB11H12-) were synthesized from 12-iodo-CB11H11- by microwave initiated Kumada coupling.  A series of compounds with the formula 12-R-CB11H11- [R = Me, Et, i-Pr, n-Hex, Ph] were isolated as Et4N+ salts and fully characterized.  Typical reactions were complete in  minutes and gave yields of 70 � 80%.  This study demonstrates the  utility of microwave irradiation for Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions of  the CB11H12- cluster.  Details of the Kumada coupling reactions and investigations of other MWI-promoted couping reactions of the CB11H12- cluster are presented.
