A number of strategies have been employed to incorporate fluorine-18 into candidate radiopharmaceuticals for PET imaging. In an effort to speed the process of incorporation of fluoinre-18 into organic molecules two automated processes have been developed. The first process involves the introduction of fluorine-18 into the fluoromethane ([18F]CH3F) and aromatic rings with out the need to completely dry the aqueous [18F]fluoride ion produced in the cyclotron target. The second process involves the automated conversion of the [18F]CH3F into [18F]F2 gas. In the former process the aqueous [18F]fluoride ion is trapped on ion exchange column and released in the desired reaction solution. Incorporation of [18F]fluoride ion into useful molecules has been demonstrated in bulk processes or by microfluidics reactions. In the latter process [18F]CH3F is electrolytically converted into [18F]F2 gas which is then used to label biologically active molecules. These approaches facilitate the efficient incorporation of fluorine-18 into useful imaging agents.
