Organic electronics such as conducting polymers are plastics that conduct electricity and solution processable materials that can be easily developed into applications such as sensors, organic solar cells, and transistors. Among the electrically conductive polymers, poly(3-hexylthiophene) and polyaniline are attractive nanostructured candidates for applications in organic thin-film transistors and pH based sensors. Here we demonstrate rapid and directional interfacial assembly that leads to thin-film architectures and control of optoelectronic properties in transparent coatings of conducting polymers. Thin-film deposition is carried out both at the liquid-liquid and liquid-air interface in order to correlate the interfacial environment associated with the method of deposition with the electronic behavior of the solid-state film. Transparent and continuously conductive hybrid thin-films of silver nanowires and conducting polymer nanofibers are also produced and serve as transparent conductive coatings characterized by high conductivity, high environmental stability, and electrochromic behavior.
