The first step in the synthesis of new materials is a new approach.  We have successfully prepared a series of four nickel thiophosphate anions from the elements via an ionothermal route using EMIM BF4 (EMIM = 1-ethyl,3-methylimidazolium).  The anions [Ni(P3S9)2]4�,  [Ni(P2S8)2]2�, [Ni(P3S9)(P2S8)]3�, and [(NiP3S8)4(PS4)]7� all contain octahedral Ni(II).  The first three contain only P(V), but the latter contains both P(V) and P(III) atoms.  Physical properties will be presented for the new anions.
