Norbornane 1,2 dithiolate (S2-ndt)2- is a conformationally fixed 1,2 alkane dithiolate ligand.  It had been previously used to characterize the first example of a stable Ni(III) tetrathiolate complex (Fox, S.; Wang, Y.; Silver, A.; Millar, M. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1990  , 112, 3218.)  Complexes with Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(II) and Co(III) have been structurally characterized.  Some of the observed coordination geometries are distinct from those of the corresponding [M(1,2-ethanediolate)2]2- complexes.  [MII(edt)2]2- (M = Co, Fe) have been previously reported by Holm et. al to have tetrahedral coordination.  In contrast, [FeII(S2-ndt)2]2- has a square planar geometries while [CoII(S2-nbd)2]2- has been crystallized either with square planar or tetrahedral geometries.  [CoIII(S2-ndt)2]1- is a rare example of a 4-coordinate square planar Co(III) complex.  The metal complexes of  the (S2-ndt)2- ligand are also electronic distinct from extensively studies complexes with 1,2,dithiolene ligands.
