Novel, metal-containing ionogels have been synthesized using NiCl2�6H2O, Gd(NO3)3�6H2O, glycine, and pyridine in the ionic liquid EMIM(EtSO4). Microwave, bomb, and oil bath were used to heat the reactions, with the microwave reaction providing the most efficient method that also yields the highest-quality gels. Gadolinium is present in a trace amount in the gel, and can be replaced with Sm or Tb. Unlike replacing the lanthanides, experiments using other transition metals, specifically Cu2+, Co2+, and Mn2+, have not yet yielded a viable gel.  Thermogravimetric analysis shows that our ionogel is between 50 and 60% ionic liquid, and that decomposition of the gel occurs between 370 and 380oC.  This is consistent with the decomposition of EMIM(EtSO4), which decomposes at 373oC. The gel backbone can be isolated by washing the gel to remove the ionic liquid. Progress toward understanding the structure of the backbone and the means of its formation will be discussed.
