N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have mostly been used as ancillary ligands for the preparation of transition metal-based catalysts.  Owing to their unique electronic and steric properties, they have been incorporated in a large variety of catalytically active metal complexes The corresponding complexes are often less sensitive to air and moisture, and have proven remarkably resistant to oxidation. Here, we report the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a series of new rhodium and iridium complexes derived from novel fluorophore tagged NHC.
