Gadolinium(III) complexes are widely used commercially as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents.  The current commercial Gd(III) complexes function by shortening the proton relaxation times of nearby water protons; however there remains room for improvement with regard to this effect.  The goal of this study is to develop a new ligand for Gd(III) based on a tripodal Schiff base/pyridine chelating scaffold.  To confirm the presence of the desired product the synthesized ligand and metal complex have been analyzed with IR, UV-Vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopy.  Complexes of other Ln(III) metals, such as europium, have also been prepared for characterization purposes and gaining insight into the parameters that influence proton relaxation in the Gd(III) analog.  Chelate stability and preliminary proton relaxation enhancement studies have also been conducted and will be discussed.
