Despite recent advances made in transition metal catalysis, only a small percentage utilize first-row transition metals, despite their enormously high abundance and low cost relative to their second and third row counterparts.  This dearth of interest stems, in part, from the ability of first-row transition metals to participate in single-electron transfer reactions, leading towards undesired reaction pathways.  We are developing a new class of ligands which act to stabilize both the Ni(0) and Ni(II) oxidation states, thereby forcing �standard� two-electron chemistry.  The results of this study are herein presented.
