Recent work by many groups has shown that ligands containing suitably-tuned pendant amines can be powerful allies in producing complexes active for electrochemically driven redox reactions with H2. Previously, a family of bis-diphosphine manganese(I) complexes was prepared and their reactions with H2 were investigated. The present study extends this investigation and further explores a number of chemical processes relevant to important catalytic processes. Mono- and mixed bis-diphosphine complexes were prepared and compared in terms of electrophilicity, redox properties, reactivity with simple substrates. The ability of the P2N2 ligand to be a 6-electron donor (k3-P,N,P) tends to dominate the stability of the cationic manganese complexes.
