Nitric oxide plays an important role in vasodilatation and increases the effectiveness of radiation treatment; therefore there is considerable interest in developing methods that can control the location, timing and dosage of nitric oxide in vivo. In this context, we are developing photochemical NO precursors that can be attached to an appropriate molecular or quantum dot (QD) photosensitizer.   Zinc selenide quantum dots are of interest, since they can be attached to photo-NORMs as an 'antenna' .  To make ZnSe QDs we have optimized  a simple 1-pot synthesis from zinc octanoate and selenium dioxide in the noncoordinating solvent 1-octadecene with the surfactants: trioctylphosphine and 1,2-hexadecandiol.  After ZnSe core growth, the crude reaction mixture is combined with zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (as well as other surfactants) and zinc sulfide capped in the same pot. This simple 1-pot synthesis achieves violet emissive ZnSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots and is highly reproducible.
