The reductive elimination of halogens from a metal centre is an unusual process which has been the subject of great interest due to its unfavourable thermodynamics. This reactivity is usually facilitated by a trapping mechanism or a secondary reaction in order to subdue the reverse reaction�the oxidative addition of the halogens.In our work, [AuX2(CN)2]�-based coordination polymers (X=Cl, Br, I)1 were synthesized and structurally characterized. Aqueous suspensions of these or their precursors in situ were heated hydrothermally or exposed to UV radiation,2 triggering the reductive elimination of halogens from the Au(III) centres and yielding analogous Au(I)-based coordination polymers containing [Au(CN)2]�.
