Derivatives of azulene, an unusual nonbenzenoid aromatic hydrocarbon, find numerous applications in the design of advanced materials.  This presentation will address the influence of the junction group's nature on the formation, stability, reactivity, and physicochemical characteristics of azulenic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films on the Au(111) surface.  Both isocyano and mercapto �alligator clips� can be regioselectively installed and induce approximately parallel orientation of the azulenic framework with respect to the surface normal. The films' properties were evaluated by various means including surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy, optical ellipsometry, and conductivity measurements.  Characterization of certain azulenic molecular films was greatly facilitated by incorporation of ancillary infrared �spectroscopic handles� into the structure of the azulenic frameworks.  In addition, competitive binding of several isocyano- and mercaptoazulenes to atomically flat gold surfaces will be discussed.
