At a photoanode, a high energy photo-excited hole is capable of oxidizing hydrocarbons.  In many organic compounds such as methanol, isopropanol, and oxalate, a single oxidation fragments the molecule revealing a radical that can inject an electron into the conduction band of the anode, a process called current doubling.  TiO2 and other large band gap semiconductors exhibit this phenomenon.  In this study, we are probing the fundamental limits of current doubling.
