Multishell semiconductor nanocrystals displaying dual emission based on the recently discovered exciton-storage-by-Mn2+ mechanism have been prepared that show robust photo- and thermal stability while retaining the attractive high thermal sensitivity of simpler first generation materials. Dual emission is demonstrated following phase transfer into aqueous media and at temperatures up to 300 �C, making these sensors suitable for thermometry in biology or biotechnology.
