Straightforward syntheses of four-, five-, and six-coordinate ruthenium-carbyne complexes related to the Grubbs catalysts for olefin metathesis are described. Reversible two-electron redox processes that preserve the carbyne unit are discussed. Reactions that interconvert carbene and carbyne complexes are highlighted. Special attention is given to (i) differences attributable to ligation by bulky phosphane vs. N-heterocyclic carbene ligands; and (ii) the effects of ancillary chelating ligands.
