The use of herbicides is one of the most common sources of pollution of air, land and water.  There are several ways that herbicides can move from the target onto non-target crops: (i) drift by physical movement of spray (can occur from both ground and aerial applications), (ii) volatilization by evaporation of the applied herbicide, and (iii) lateral movement by ground water.  Also, all the commercial formulations contain �inert� ingredients, other than the herbicidal active form, which can make the commercial products more toxic than the active form itself.  There is an increasing interest in finding alternatives to these herbicidal formulations that will maintain or improve the herbicidal properties while eliminating pollution issues and increasing efficacy.  This presentation will discuss our efforts to diminish the environmental damage from herbicides by reducing herbicide volatility and drift, decreasing water solubility of the herbicides, improving herbicide delivery and efficacy, and enhancing herbicidal penetration by developing ionic liquid forms of several common herbicides.
