We report the systematic tuning of the ligand-localized ??* excited states of a series of diimine complexes zinc(II) of the type Zn (diimine)X2 (where X = halogen or pseudohalogen) as probed by electronic absorption and luminescence spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures.  The nature of the perturbation of the ??* manifold by diimine ligand substituents (particularly electron releasing substituents) and choice of X ligand in these d10 complexes is investigated.   The connection between excited state positions and the effective density of positive charge at the metal center is explored.
